Project Description

AkzoNobel is a leading global multinational corporation in the manufacturing of paints and coatings (owning brands like Dulux and Maxilite). For the chemical industry, the wastewater treatment system plays a vital role in ensuring the sustainable operation of the factory and strict compliance with environmental laws. VIETTOP Construction is proud to be entrusted by AkzoNobel with the heavy responsibility of constructing the entire structural infrastructure and installing equipment for the Wastewater Treatment System at the Dong Nai plant, marking VIETTOP’s elevation in highly technical industrial projects.

Project Requirements

  • Chemical corrosion resistance: Wastewater from the paint manufacturing industry contains numerous complex chemical components. The storage tank systems, pipelines, and concrete surfaces must have absolute waterproofing capabilities and the highest level of chemical corrosion resistance.
  • Global HSE standards: The construction environment in a chemical plant requires stringent safety measures, especially Confined Space working procedures for tunnel and underground tank categories.
  • MEP system precision: Requires the accurate installation of the process piping network, diaphragm pump systems, agitators, and automated control cabinets.
  • Zero production disruption: The process of tying in the new system had to be meticulously calculated to avoid halting the current production activities of the entire factory.

Approach & Methodology

  • Specialized materials and techniques: Applied waterproof mass concrete pouring technology, while simultaneously executing Composite (FRP) lining and chemical-resistant Epoxy coating for all tank interiors to ensure a structural lifespan of decades.
  • Absolute safety control: VIETTOP’s HSE team conducted toxic gas measurements, issued daily work permits, and established forced ventilation systems before allowing workers to operate inside the underground tanks.
  • Tie-in planning: Coordinated closely with the AkzoNobel plant management board to plan pipe connections during weekends or night shifts, ensuring zero-downtime for the production line.

Project Outcomes

  • Safe handover in 2021: The project concluded with an absolute occupational safety record, fully meeting the strict criteria set by global AkzoNobel.
  • Standardized operation: The treatment tank cluster exhibited no leakage or cracking, and the pumping system operated stably. The treated water quality 100% met the discharge standards of the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment.
  • Affirming core competencies: The project’s success proved VIETTOP’s capability in constructing complex environmental infrastructure, paving the way for future heavy industry projects.
